The Opportunity

ANT Recruitment is supporting an established and growing Caribbean-based organisation in the appointment of an experienced Hydraulic Mechanic / Engine Specialist.

This is a hands-on technical role involving the installation, diagnosis, repair and maintenance of hydraulic systems, engines and associated mechanical equipment.

The successful candidate will have strong practical experience working with hydraulic components and a range of engine types, including diesel, petrol, marine inboard and outboard systems.

You will work closely with the Director of Operations and wider technical team to ensure vessels, machinery and equipment remain safe, reliable and operational.

What You'll Be Doing

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Installing new and used engines, hydraulic systems and associated components.
  • Inspecting, diagnosing and repairing hydraulic pumps, valves, cylinders, motors and related systems.
  • Carrying out preventive maintenance and system upgrades to improve reliability and performance.
  • Reading and interpreting hydraulic schematics, technical diagrams, manuals and engineering drawings.
  • Diagnosing and repairing diesel, petrol, marine and alternative-fuel engines.
  • Working on marine inboard and outboard engines, generators and associated systems.
  • Carrying out routine servicing, including oil changes, filter replacement, tuning and general adjustments.
  • Rebuilding, replacing and repairing engine and hydraulic components.
  • Identifying the parts, materials, tools and supplies required for each task.
  • Using specialist diagnostic tools and equipment to investigate mechanical and hydraulic faults.
  • Supporting vessel inspections, maintenance and repair activities.
  • Assisting with shoreside vessel dry-docking and maintenance of other machinery and systems.
  • Carrying out basic fibreglass repairs and machinery-detailing work when required.
  • Cleaning, sanding, waxing, painting and protecting machinery and equipment.
  • Maintaining workshops, buildings, vehicles, machinery and yard areas.
  • Preparing estimates for new repair and maintenance work.
  • Maintaining accurate records of work completed, defects identified and parts used.
  • Working with management and colleagues to ensure repairs are completed efficiently and on schedule.
  • Liaising professionally with customers while working on their vessels or equipment.
  • Supporting the training and development of less experienced team members.
  • Following company procedures, standard operating procedures and relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Ensuring all work complies with pollution-control and environmental guidelines.
  • Maintaining clean, organised and safe working areas.
  • Reporting health and safety concerns to management.
  • Supporting additional technical and operational duties when required.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for a practical and experienced mechanic with strong diagnostic ability and broad exposure to hydraulic, engine and marine systems.

You should have:

  • At least two years' hands-on experience as a Hydraulic Mechanic, Engine Specialist, Marine Mechanic or similar technician.
  • A recognised qualification or certification in hydraulic systems, engine repair or a related mechanical discipline.

Or:

  • A recognised marine trade qualification covering the service, maintenance and repair of power and sailing vessels.
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems, components and fault-finding techniques.
  • Experience troubleshooting and overhauling marine inboard and outboard engines.
  • Experience working with diesel, petrol and other specialised engine systems.
  • Experience maintaining generators, heavy equipment, industrial machinery or marine engines.
  • The ability to read and interpret service manuals, exploded diagrams, engineering sketches, charts and work orders.
  • Strong mechanical, diagnostic, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to identify parts and materials and estimate repair requirements.
  • Experience using specialist tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to complete work within agreed deadlines.
  • The ability to manage varied tasks and remain effective under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A professional manner when dealing with customers and working on their vessels or equipment.
  • A willingness to share technical knowledge and support the training of colleagues.
  • A mature, dependable and self-motivated approach to work.
  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • The physical fitness required to complete manual, workshop and vessel-based duties.
  • Current First Aid, CPR and AED certifications.
  • The ability to drive trucks and operate workboats where required.
  • A valid driving licence or the ability to obtain the locally required licence within the agreed period.
  • The flexibility to respond to operational call-outs outside normal working hours.

Working Conditions

This is a six-month contract involving work across workshop, vessel, marine and project-site environments within the Caribbean.

The position will involve physically demanding duties, working around engines, hydraulic systems and industrial machinery, and occasional exposure to confined areas, changing weather and marine conditions.

The successful candidate must be prepared to respond to call-outs at varying hours depending on operational requirements.
